50% of children born in Masset are iligit [illegitimate]
only the old generation has the dignified
courtesy; Maggie [Henson] finds the indians considerably
slower at learning, right across the board.
Sam [Simpson] now partly packaging under Carnation's names:
brand names weaseling out the small operator.
Party broke up at 1:30 + we flopped in bed
May 22 [1961]
Up late. Checked around for lift to
Langara. Found Dave Adams (Indian + al-
ready well on to a booze-up) would take
us out tomorrow. Shall try to make
17 in own Boat.
Out to Tow Hill. Peale's falcons re-
sident. Shot 2 old sqaws for P. [Peter] Henson. About
a dozen of those + w.w. [white-winged] scoters. Pete [Henson]
wants to see what shelfish [shellfish] they are eating
Wilf [Schofield] puttered for mosses on the basaltic
monolith + was amazed at the paucity of
bryophytes. Pete [Peter Henson] fished + as usual got
a few good pans full.
En route buck picked up 2 bear skulls
that Walt. [Walter] Feyer had set aside for us.
Cleanup in Sam [Simpson]'s factory facilities
Another supper with Henson's + pre-
paring for trip west.
Pete [Peter Henson] tells of Percy Williams of
Skidegate as best trapper: also P.W. [Percy Williams] regularly
notes an Elephant Seal or 2 out Marble Island
May 23 [1961]
Weeded out a few heavy items in the hope
that we'll to sk [words crossed out] be light enough to be able
to skim over the water. At 9 we left
Wilf [Schofield] + Pete [Peter Henson] standing on the beach + headed
off to Langara [Island].
Had a following wind most of way. Usually
a bit rough for skimming. Saw few hundred
of Pelagic cormorants + Rhino [Rhinoceros] Auklets, few
dozen a. [arctic] loons + ww [white-winged] scoters (especially off
Masset Inlet) [illegible note inserted above]. Only saw a couple of
eagles en route - often too far from land.
Paused briefly to look at Pillar Rock.
Entered Henslung Bay at 2 pm - 5 hr. [hour] drive
