Food. In the Crofton Lakes country
deer were evidently abundant
though we saw none in
3 1/2 hrs [hours] in the woods. There
was lots of sign.
We worked the ridges,
along the tops of these were
scattered firs, of the usual
open stand - 12" to 2 ft [feet] in
diameter. Bush spirea +
arbutus were abundant also
salal + both berberis. The
salal had been moderately
browsed, the berberis not at
all + the arbutus heavily
browsed; in some cases the
latter were almost leafless
but in no case had the
small growing tip of young
leaves been eaten. In
other words arbutus is taken
little or not at all in
the late spring.
At this time the favorite foods
appeared to be new leaves of
certain of the shrubs + herbs. The
following were noted as utilized
Camassia [underlined] The young quill-like
sprouts of year old plants were
present in large "lawns" on the
