then went for a 12 mile walk eastward
The objective was to see the nature of
the forest + something of the game birds
We saw 1 hazel grouse 2 [female symbol] blackgame
+ 1 male Capercaille [Capercaillie]. This bird stayed in a
pine top until I went past + then broke
out in flight. It looked as big as a turkey.
I am most surprised to know that they
make long movements during peak periods
sometimes 300 miles or more + moving in
big flocks sometimes flying so high one
can just identify them. They cross the
Gulf of Bothnia in some narrow places
+ pile up along the shore. Some even
cross to Sweden in the north; There is a
return movement but nothing spectacular.
This bird during the winter moves into
pine stands along the margins of swampy
areas + prefers to feed in the very tops
of flat-topped alder trees. In the summer +
autumn it eats a lot of berries. Its winter
