Marmota flaviventris [underlined] is almost identical in color + size with my Boston Bar specimen #55-12-24-125. No skull. I think Howell's assignment was wrong but it would be difficult to prove + little would be gained. Marmota c. [caligata] okanagana [underlined] King 55.12.24.126 Label says brought back alive from Capt [Captain] Backs Exped. [Expedition] Norway House, N [North] end L. [Lake] Winnipeg. Specimen crown black, a few white hairs between eyes. Ears + line down side of neck black. Fore feet black save for small white patch on 2nd [second] joint of 2 middle toes Sides of neck yellowish-gray white. Mouth grey, rump dull ochraceous heavily tipped with black; tail black. Underparts grayish, washed [stained?] yellowish. ostensible skull badly distorted from severe infection of the jaws. Nasals extend 3 mm [millimetres] behind pmx. [premaxilla] + are relatively straight across post. [posterior] margin Zygomet breadth 40 mm [millimetres], greatest L. [length] 97; width behind supraorb. Label states San Francisco, this crossed + Vancouver Isl. [Island] substituted, this crossed + Ft [Fort] Vancouver cited with Ref. [Reference] to Howell. The skull is in this spec. [specimen] It is richly colored, particularly on shoulders + lower sides. Abd. [Abdomen] white, outer stripes gray, inner brown.
