  • 172 Keremeos May 21/54. [1954] The Ashnola River was so high that we were advised not to go up it so [Miklos D.F.] Udvardy + I went up Pauls Creek instead. We climbed to 5000' there + had a good look at the range. Deer sign scarce, sheep sign on the W [west] side not abundant. Range in truly horrible condition with Taraxacum the dominant plant. Balsamorrhiza in great beds at 4500-3000 feet. I seriously doubt that this range offers much winter capacity for game. Saw 2 blue grouse, 2 Calliope hummers [hummingbirds] 1 Rufous hummer [hummingbird] feeding on the current flowers + the usual assortment of birds for the area. Only mammals seen were 2 chipmunks + 1 squirrel Vaux swifts, 3 pr [pairs] Wood Duck at [Herb] Clarks place. Keremeos. May 22, 1954. Left at 5:30 + drove to Kruger Mt. [Mountain] with Mr + Mrs [Herb] Clark. There climbed the hill, proceeded s [south] along its crest + down to the road at the S [south] end. I saw quite a bit of deer sign but not an abundance. Some bear sign This area is too low + too vulnerable for sheep but is a most interesting + varied bit of country Lazuli buntings, house wrens, Tolmie Warblers abundant in the Amelanchier swales.
