- Loch of Trool which I also photographed despite
the poor weather. Buchan Hill is an
historic spot where Bruce defeated an
English force by rolling rocks down on them.
It was a memorable day. In all directions
the land was rough + desolate with outcroppings
of bare rock much in evidence, steep
corries + small cliffs. No house was
to be seen in any direction but everywhere
were the stone dykes built about 1760
by the Lairds of Scotland to enclose the
sheep range. The fencing lead to a
peasants revolt + many of the dykes were
torn down in 1763 but were later
rebuilt. There were no trees above the
valley floor.
Deer. The Red deer here are an overflow
from the Duke of Bedfords deer forest not
far away + perhaps only a 100 or so
are on the entire area. The annual
take is confined to stags + only about 8 are
shot each year.
Leases are based upon the market value
of the deer - about L [pounds] 20 per head of the
expected take. Similarly grouse moors
are leased on a L [pounds] 1 per brace rate.
We saw about 24 deer including
4 stags big dark fellows with darker necks,
about 7 calves + the rest hinds + yearlings.
