- July 8/64. [1964] Joined Carina at Campbell River at 12:30
hrs. [hours] After stowing gear caught the ebb
tide at 16:30 + proceeded north passing
through Seymour Narrows at 17:35.
Anchored in Granite Bay for the night
at 19:35. Rain all the way.
Went ashore + examined the beach
casually: Tide only about 8-9 ft. [feet]
Bottom at head of bay sandy, shore
of boulders outside bay.
Birds [underlined] + mammals: Two or three glaucous-winged gulls,
5 loons, one in breeding plumage, 4 in winter
plumage. murrelets common all day. Ashore
heard Tolmie warblers, song sparrows,
varied + russet-backed thrush. Off Campbell
R. [river] sighted a small whale, fin too large for finback, small for Orca.
Molluscs [underlined]: Collected 100 oysters in a few square yds [yards]
+ from these removed the entire population
of Acmaea. Noted 2 or 3 A. [Acmaea] digitalis [underlined], a dozen
or two A. [Acmaea] scutum [underlined], the most abundant
species is A. [Acmaea] "paradigitalis". Suggest having
the radulas of this lot prepared + compared
at similar sizes.
Along the upper + mid-tide levels
the fauna was depauperate. The usual 2 littorina
common, Thais emarginata [underlined], A. [Acmaea] scutum [underlined],
A. [Acmaea] cassis [underlined] (scara), A [space left blank] abundant.
No. A. [Acmaea] digitalis [underlined] seen despite careful search
of a limited area. On the beach Clinocardium [underlined],
Tapes phillipinarum [philippinarum] [underlined], Mya arenaria [underlined], Macoma nasuta [underlined],
M. [Macoma] inexpectata [underlined], + Saxidomus.
