  • Foreword To receive a large and fine collection in a single field of ceramic history with the depth, integrity and quality as the Carol Potter Peckham collection of Yixing wares certainly marks a special milestone in the history of the development of any collection. The Vancouver Museum and the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria have both been recently enriched by the generous donation of Mrs. Carol Potter Peckham from Palo Alta, California. This recent gift to the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria and the Vancouver Museum forms the core of this special joint exhibition which traces the variety of Yixing teapot shapes inspired by nature and geometry. This collection dates from the early nineteenth century to the early twentieth century and comes from the famous pottery centre of Yixing in Jiangsu province, China. These works traditionally bear a connection to the Chinese literati, the original production dating back to the sixteenth century when some were commissioned by Chinese scholars. In addition to the Carol Potter Peckham donation, other generous lenders have contributed their works on loan for this exhibition. We wish to express our sincere gratitude both to Carol Potter Peckham and to all the lenders. It is their generosity which has enabled this first serious examination of Yixing ware in Canada. It is our hope that the exhibition will be one of immediate interest to our visitors and readers. For funding this exhibition and publication, we wish to extend our sincere appreciation to Mrs. Carol Potter Peckham, the Leon and Thea Koerner Foundation, and the Boards of the Vancouver Museum and the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. We want, too, to thank Paula Swart and Barry Till who have worked closely with this material to produce this important exhibition and publication. It is a great pleasure for the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria and the Vancouver Museum to work together in presenting this joint project, and our congratulations go to all involved. Patricia E. Bovey Director Art Gallery of Greater Victoria Michael Campbell President of the Board Vancouver Museum 3
