- July 6. [1961]
Slept in as still raining + blowing
Finally rose to fight elements. Two young
Rattus rattus a. [alexandrinus] [underlined] at Murchison; 1 rat, 1 peri. [peromyscus][underlined]
one [word crossed out] 2 shrews at Lyell. At inner Bischoff I. [Island],
5 peri [Peromyscus] and 4 shrews. Out [word crossed out] went to
outer de la Beche Island, set 40 traps each
here. Another 30 each on nearest point
of Moresby. Nearby an eagles nest, 1 young
well advanced, 30' up a cedar. Another
60 traps on Haswell Bay Island, Eagle's
nest, 60' up a dead tree. Evidence of
Grey (Fork-tailed) Petrels nesting here.
Many large burrows, one bit of white
egg shell, + grey feathers.
July 7,
Mostly cloudy.
Nil in traps on islands + only 3 [number crossed out] 4
mice on Moresby. After lunch of red
snapper, pushed off heavily laden for Jedway.
Three hours later, + a good deal cooler, came
to Burnaby Narrows. We stopped for
supper, skinned our mice. Four
eagles nests:-
In Burnaby narrows caught 3 nice blue backs.
Arrived at Jedway at 10:00 p.m. to find
a changed country: 30 men now logging
+ blasting in preparation for mining. Saw
Newton again. Camped for night in
bunkhouse.
July 8, [1961]
Moved camp to Fish Guardian
shack at George Bay; 2 eagles nests en
route - one just w. [west] Harriet Har. [Harbour], other on
outer island in Huston Inlet. Set 40 traps (X2)
on this island. Waited at Jedway for Kendall
to bring in a gas supply. then headed
off to set 80 traps on Poole Inlet Island.
Good cliff face c [with] about 50 prs. [pairs] of
cormorants nesting. Peregrines present.
Island riddled with holes - look like
Cassins Auklets.
Salmon jumping about Geo. [George] Bay camp
in evening.
July 9
Picked up another 12 1/2 gallons of
gas at Jedway. Nothing in traps on island
near camp, but in Poole Inlet Island caught
4 adult + 5 juvenile Peromyscus [underlined] = 31-39 gms [grams].
More sign of Cassin's Auklets. Peregrine c [with]
2 flying young. Herring gulls nesting here [words crossed out] too
