Qian Du (1763-1844) The Bamboo House at Huanggang/ album leaf mounted as hanging scroll; ink and colour on paper; 23.5 x 26.6 cm; rom Qian Du, born into a wealthy artistic family, was able to amass a large collection of old paint�ings which he studied and imitated. Most of his paintings display his admiration of the Wu school brush techniques, especially the refined manner of Wen Zhengming (1470-1559). Be�cause he was well off, he travelled extensively and devoted his life to the art of painting. 39. Kai Qi (1774-1829) The Scribe; hanging scroll; ink and colour on silk; 76.3 x 41.4 cm; rom Kai Qi was a poet as well as a painter. He painted landscapes, flowers, genre scenes, and Buddhist figures. He imitated the style of the following painters: Li Gonglin (c. 1040-1106), Zhao Mengfu (1254-1322), Tang Yin (1470- 1523)5 and Chen Hongshou (1599-1652). 40. Zhang Shibao (1805-1879) (a) Buddhist Arhats; hanging scroll; ink and colour on silk; 138.5 X63.4 cm; Gift of J. P. E. Klaverwyden; aggv (b) Courtyard Scene; hanging scroll; ink and colour on silk; 130.6x46.6 cm; Gift of J. P. E. Klaverwyden; aggv Zhang Shibao, a native of Shandong province, was a skilled calligrapher and a painter of land�scapes, flowers and figures. His paintings were influenced by the Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou. His brushwork was excellent and his painting had an air of refinement. 42. Empress Gi Xi (1835-1908) Rocks and Epidendra; hanging scroll; ink on paper; 198.5x81.4 cm; J. P. E. Klaverwyden Fund; aggv Ci Xi, the last Empress of China, is known to Westerners as the Empress Dowager. Her extra�ordinary reign ranks in history with Queen Vic�toria of England and Catherine the Great of Russia. She was born into a troubled time, when China�s last imperial empire was waning. How�ever, this powerful and beautiful woman was able to hold the nation and dynasty together from the 1860�s until her death in 1908 at the age of 74. To relieve herself of the tensions of State, she took up the brush and became a fairly skilful amateur painter. The painting illustrated here is not of exceptional quality but it is his�torically important. The calligraphy on it is by Jun Xiang (1841-1915). 41. Ren Yi (1840-1896) * Boat with Passengers Under Pine Trees; hang�ing scroll; ink and colour on paper; dimensions unavailable; Gift of Mr. R. W. Finlayson; ohf Ren Yi was a member of a group of nineteenth- century painters known as the �Four Ren�s,� which also included Ren Xiong, Ren Xun and Ren You. He painted landscapes, portraits, flowers, birds and animals. He imitated the style of the old Song masters and Chen Hongshou (i599-l652).
