  • [August] 23rd [1944] Traps yielded voles + peromyscus [deer mice]. Shot red squirrel. Left 10 or so. Late lunch at Moyie L. [lake] Arrived Cranbrook 2 pm. Phoned + called at W.B. Johnstone's on Garden Ave. Mr. Johnston took Hardy and me to see site of fissil beds ( [space left blank] ) about 6 miles N. [north] of city; stopped at Turtle lake on way back. After dinner Mr. J [Johnston] + Holland drove back along highway to swamp + set traps. [August] 24 [1944] Trap yielded 1 house mouse only. Left fairly early (9 am?) for Windermere. Fine weather. Met Mr. Clelland at Invermere: Inspected bat colony in Memorial Hall but could obtain no specimens. Started up road to mine; lunch at old buildings at foot of main climb. Removed small trees + one large boulder from rd [road] + met Mr Fred Reger + Bob Mitchel of Sheep Creek Mines on rd [road] - attempting to remove large fir tree which bloacked rd [road]. Left them after clearing way, at 1:30 + arrived at mine an hour later - low gear all the way. Set traps in vicinity of mine buildings; mouse signs everywhere. Persons at mine - Mr + Mrs Fred Reger (in charge) Mr + Mrs. Wm[?]. Robert (Bob) Mitchell + Joan (Mrs Mitchell as cook). Chris Hansen, Ev [Space left blank], Pete [space left blank] Ed Barbour. [August] 25 [1944] Good catch in traps - long tailed voles, short tailed voles, shrew, peromyscus [deer mice]. Mr Johnstone set 2 traps for marten.
