- Mammals - Lac la Hache area
Red squirrel [underlined] - very abundant in
all wooded areas. On occasion three
could be seen at one time and several
others heard.
"Always numerous" G. Forbes. Skins paid
31 [cent symbol] a piece - 25 to 30 a day on the average
Flying squirrel [underlined] - common but seldom
seen. A nest was found in a Douglas
fir stub. The dead tree was about
14" [inches] in diam [diameter] at ground level and
about 20' [feet] high. Hole was about
12' [feet] up. When stub was struck with
gun butt a squirrel put its head out then
withdrew it + refused to shot itself
no matter how hard the tree was pounded.
Several days later (July 3/42 [1942]) the stub
was cut down. The squirrel did not
appear until the tree hit the ground
when the female leaped from the hole
as the tree bounced, scrambled along the ground
and climbed a nearby tree in which it
was shot. While attempting to dislodge the
dead female, a young one left the nest
+ was seen and caught some yards away.
The nest was about 5"[inches] in diam [diameter] and about
10" [inches] deep; the bottom was filled with dry shredded
bark, abounding in fleas.
