- Amphibia - 5
shallow margins supposedly to take
advantafe of the warmer water, sunshine
+ possibly increased food supply. Larvae
with hind legs about half developed are
present in most parts; metamorphosing individuals
in only a few; The majority are just showing
hind limb development and will almost certainly
be caught by the first freeze up which usually
occurs in early September.
Several small adults were seen in various places;
whether or not they are young of the year is not
known. Most liely they are progeny of last
year, hence in their second year.
[August] 29th [1943] Area mentioned previously was reexamined
this morning after a day + night of heavy
rain + one A. gracile [Ambystoma gracile - Northwestern salamander] was found
under one of the small logs.
Size 104 mm. [millimeters]
Gill stumps still showing - no doubt
it left the lake during the previous
24 hrs. [hours]
Another specimen 120 mm [millimeters] in length was
found under a log in dense woods about
10 yds [yards] from lake edge - no sign of gill
stumps + more spotting
Panther Lake - jelly masses of recently
hatched Ambystoma gracile eggs were observed
in upper end of lake loosely lying on bottom
in shallow water.
