- Pipestone Cabin. July 18/43 [1943]
Horses left us again + we did not
get started until 4 PM + arrived here
8 miles down river at 6. Spent the
best part of the day prowling the sheep
+ goat range east of camp. Goat had
been working balsam in the winter
+ recently had been eating the short
purple headed grass heavily.
Moose sign well up on the sidehill
where the balsams were heavily
worked. The willow + birch above
snow line are dead or cropped
even. Balsam seems to me to be
a second choice browse, with willow
favored.
Percy Woodworth reports seeing 12
cow elk in here in February. They
were living on the flats around
the junction of Molar Cr. [Creek] + the Little
Pipestone with the Pipestone. Almost
5 ft [feet] of snow at the time but they
looked to be in good condition.
Has seen sheep wintering on the
s [south] face of mount Drummond. Found
a dead one there on the ice winter
before last. There were 6 coyotes feeding
on it at the time.
Rained this morning but the evening
looks too good to be true.
No wolf sign on the Pipestone
very few lynx, have never seen a cougar track here.
