- several adult bulls seen were
clean but others had not
started to moult. The nursing
cows were most of them
very ragged.
Antlers [underlined]: The cows all have
antlers, + even those of the
yearlings are as big as those of
2 yr [year] old bull caribou. The
old cows have very fine sets
of antlers. The castrates mature
antlers + shed the velvet but
do so at a date later than
the cows which are in turn later
than the bulls. The castrates'
antlers are of normal form
but are held for a shorter
period than those of any other
category. Dates of shedding would
be most desireable [desirable].
It would seem from the behavior
of the castrates in this regard that
a hormone, other than that of the
gonad is involved in antler growth
+ maturity in Rangifer [underlined]. This was [words crossed out]
It would seem worthwhile investigating
the adrenal cortex hormone
for its involvement but the
experiment would probably be
more fruitful if carried out
