  • Radium Hot Springs June 27/43. [1943] Today examined the winter sheep range adjacent to the Springs. The more open parts are largely outside the park + give evidence of heavy overgrazing with gully + sheet erosion + mechanical soil damage heavy along the benches + valley of Sinclair Creek. There is some submarginal timber range for sheep - fair mule deer range - in the park but even this is being rapidly extirpated by forest cover. Plants in the timber range are Fir, + pine, some aspen, Shepherdia abundant, Amelanchier, chokecherry, dogwood + Ceonathus uncommon rose + both Junipers abundant. In this region there was a heavy carry over of pine grass - 75% to 80% but this is a poor or useless late winter + spring forage. Juniperus communis [underlined] fairly heavily browsed, Ceonathus [word crossed out] Amelanchier, rose + dogwood moderately eaten but too scarce to be important On the benches scattered firs + aspen provide the forest cover. The bunch grass carryover is practically nil. (Grasses collected) [underlined] Fir moderately browsed
