- place. Draws all its water from
a well that is 80 ft [feet] deep cased in
for 40' [feet] delivers about 1000 gal. [gallons]
a minute. Cooler and more
saline than the adjacent sea
but almost devoid of O2.
They operate on an open system.
The fresh water tropicals are not
too good but the salt water
forms are excellent.
A good pond contains turtles
+ 2 Vancouver hair seals.
Tinker feels that delays in customs
+ plastic bogs of too small
size are responsible for the
lack of success in sending
fish to Vancouver.
Phoned one of the university
people but they assured me
there was nothing doing
at the university + showed
no interest in talking shop.
Entrance fee 25 [cent symbol] + this
raises $35,000 per year Staff
of 10-12.
In the afternoon hired a car
+ drove east around the
coast for 28 miles rounding
Diamond Head + Koko Head, passing
Rabbit Island. I walked some
of the beaches but found them
terribly devoid of life. A little
brown algae in the surf here
+ some ulva, neither occurred
on Wake, only a short [drawing of seaweed] bladder
shaped pale yellow-green one
at low tide. Shells are
scarce + all of small species.
Picked up representations of
some 20 species of mollusks.
Rain showers.
Sept [September? - December] 15 [1957] Honolulu
Left the hotel at 8:30
+ left the airport at 10 AM bound
for Vancouver. Heavy rain in
the morning.
