  • Odocoileus hemionus [Mule deer] Jasper to Entrance, April 17/43. [1943] Saw 37 deer of which 4 were juv. [juvenile] + one of these very sick looking. Devona:- At 6 P.M. walked about 2 miles west from cabin + in this strip 2 miles x 100 yards to 150 yards saw 32 deer of which 5 were young. + at least 4 were old bucks + others were almost surely [male symbol]'s. Kills:- [Warden Charles] Phillips tells me that early this spring 3 fawns were killed near the road near the Rocky bridge. These were pulled down by coyotes One of the does was very scrawny. Food:- Watched two [male symbol]'s eating grass for 5 mins each 10 deer minutes. Devona, Alta. [Alberta] April 18, 1943. Shot a very old doe. When first jumped it was very weak on its feet + listless. Could not bound + ran feebly with head low. Sides hollow. It ran [illegible word crossed out] + walked about 200 yds [yards] + bedded again where I later found it + shot it Food. 40% grass 40% Juniperus scopulorum 20% bear berry.
