- They were resting + feeding on the hummocky
ground at the base of the hills.
We walked about 15 miles, were rained on
frequently but had a thoroughly enjoyable
day. Home by 9:30 + saw my first
black cock en route.
Aug [August] 17 Tynron.
Sunday + went to church. Jack [McWilliams] preached a
good sermon to 17 people including the
choir of 2. He seems to have lost
interest in much of the more personal
work of the parish + but for Alice [McWilliams] it
would not get done.
In the afternoon Garry [Cowan] + I went with
Arthur Duncan + his children Andrew 6 +
Kathrine 14. We drove up to the head
of the Glen with Mrs D [Duncan] + made
arrangements for her to meet us at
615 at the head of another glen.
Unfortunately [Arthur] Duncan took a wrong turning + it was 11:30 before we
were all reunited + dinner was stowed.
Blackcock. [underlined] Up the glen we flushed a gray hen
with covey of 4 + a single gray hen.
They favor the alder [word crossed out] bracken + juncus
areas of the valley bottoms. Saw my
first water ouzel as well as
many meadow pipit. The blackcock declined
sharply in 1936 + are only just recovering.
