  • Acknowledgments The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria is proud to present Soul of the Tiger, Chinese Amber Carvings from the Reif Collection in celebration of the generous donation of a large number of Chinese amber carvings given by the Reif family. As we present this material, all of it never before published, I must extend by thanks to a number of people who have made this project possible. Mrs. Kay Reif and her late husband, Mr. Francis Reif, amassed a superb collection of Chinese carved ambers over the pass few decades. The generosity in donating numerous pieces and loaning others has brought a large and fine collection of Chinese amber carvings for display to the AGGV. We are very pleased to be able to share it with the British Columbia public and, through this catalogue with a much larger audience. Co-sponsors of the exhibition and publication, good friends Terry and Anne Ridley of CanWest Mall and Don Yuen of Fairway Markets have provided the public with an excellent opportunity to view these incredible Chinese curios and to learn more about them from this publication. Yin Zhiqiang, Director and Professor at the Nanjing Museum, has been most helpful with providing information and photographs on Chinese amber carvings found in archaeological digs. Carol Potter Peckham and Penelope Bodry-Sanders of the American Museum of Natural History have kindly sen me books on amber. The late Berthold Lufer wrote an excellent article on Asian amber, which has been most useful with writing this catalogue. Thanks must go to Mary Patten for proof reading the text and to the following staff members for help with the installation - Jay Heins, Chris Russell, Andrea Tuele, Laurie Graves and Ann Tighe, as well as Jean Addison for her supportive role in the project. The photography with the white background was wonderfully done by Bob Matheson and the other photgraphy is from the AGGV archives. Special thanks must go to former AGGV Director, Pat Bovey, for her encouragement and for all the time and effort she placed in this special project. Barry Till Curator of Asian Art April 1999
