- Cormorant. Double Crested
Ballingall Islet Aug [August] 17, 1939
Visited the colony in company
of Joyce [Cowan] + Mrs + Mrs Howard.
Found 33 nests of which 5
were empty and the remaining
28 contained 68 young varying
from just about a week old
(1 instance), to almost fledged.
The largest young had wings
well developed but in none
did contour feathers show above
the black down.
Food in evidence consisted
mainly of sculpins of a smooth
headed type up to about 10 [number crossed out] 8 inches
in length + smelts. Some
were bringing in young herring
3 to 4 inches in length.
Birds were quite tame + permitted
close approach, not so the Bairds'
nesting on the same islet.
Young gave a grating call, old
birds a hoarse croak.
