- Rangifer Jasper. May 11/45. [1945] On flats at upper end of Medicine Lake counted on May 9 22 caribou of which 12 bulls, 5 cows + 1 calf. At Maligne 2 cows. + 4 indet [indeterminate]. Last winter Macdonald counted at one time 3 caribou on Lorraine Lake + 22 on Mona Lake, 3 of the 25 were calves. There is abundant winter sign in the forests around Maligne Lake + Macdonald speaks of a pronounced increase in recent years. Food: Vegetation of Medicine L. [lake] meadow consists of the short stiff equisetum and a short thin leaved grass. Both are being eaten by the caribou Macdonald reports that the caribou resort to Mona Lake to lick the ice. Watchman Lake, Banff Park. Saw caribou tracks right along the interprovincial boundary slashing Tonquin Valley Sept. [September] 7, 1945. Since we came in here on the 3rd we have encountered 21 caribou as follows: Sept [September] 3 1 [female symbol] near cabin " [September] 4 1 [female symbol] 1 ? " " [near cabin]
