  • Killer Whale Sept. [September] 28/44 [1944] A newly born killer whale stranded itself on the beach at Cherry Point about 1:30 a.m. Residents of the district described hearing "screams" at that time and much thrashing of water. By daylight the tide had ebbed leaving the whale in a shallow depression it had scopped out of the sand and gravel. Dead. Sept [September] 29 [1944] In response to a phone call from A.A. Sherman, Dom. Fisheries Inspector, I + P.Parizean drove to the point and photographed the whale, black + white, colour + movies. Dimensions - Total length 8' [feet] 1" [inches] Across fluke 24" [inches] Vert. [vertical] height dorsal fin 11" [inches] Length of flipper 13" [inches] Girth 4' [feet] 7" [inches] Sex - Female About 2 inches of withered umbilicus was still present; teeth were still imbedded in the gums. The skull was removed for the Museum collected; the rest of the carcass was towed to deep water where it sank.
