This print shows Act XI of the play Chushingura where the ronin (masterless samurai) are attempting to break into the residence of Kira by forcing open the shutters with bent bamboo. One ronin is armed with a large axe and another carries a huge mallet to break down the gate.
Cette estampe represente le onzieme acte de la piece Chushingura qui raconte comment les ronin (samourai's sans m aft re) tentent d'entrer dans la demeure de Kira en forcant les volets au moyen de bambous recourbes. Un des ronin s'est arme d'une hache et un autre transporte un
enorme maillet pour defoncer la barriere.

Noh theatre became one of the few acceptable forms of entertainment considered appropriate for the cultural samurai. Its restrained performance was in sharp contrast to the sensational aspects of Bunraku and Kabuki theatre, which were enjoyed by the lower classes.

Palanquins, such as this one, were used by feudal lords called daimyo and required four porters. This palanquin is made of wood and is lacquered with ground dark amber nashiji. It is decorated with the gold crests of the Tokugawa family and with bamboo in gold, green, bronze and brown maki-e lacquer.
The interior has painted textile panels of cranes nesting in a pine tree, and spring flowers.
Les palanquins, comme celui-ci, servaient aux seigneurs feodaux, les daimyo, et necessitaient quatre porteurs. Ce palanquin est en bois laque sur fond ambre fonce [nashiji). II est orne des armes dorees de la famille Tokugawa et de bambous sur fond laque maki-e or, vert bronze et brun. Al'interieur, on retrouve des panneaux de tissus ornes d'un nid de grue dans un pin et de fleurs printanieres.

The print shows a bridge over a stream which runs into the Sumida River. The town residences of daimyo line both sides of the banks, and rice warehouses can be seen on the far bank.
Pont traversant un cours d'eau qui se jette dans le fleuve Sumida. Les residences du daimyo sont alignees sur les rives et on apercoit des entrepots de riz au loin.
