porcelain, underglaze blue, d. 26.5 cm Ming dynasty, 1368-1644 JMH and FMN
Interesting pair of late Ming underglaze blue plates with foliated rim and lobed cavetto are decorated in centre with a scene of two cranes next to a pine tree and bamboo. The outer rim on the left plate is decorated with chrysanthemums, while the outer rim of the right
is decorated with a design of running rabbits alternating with flowers on a blue ground. The exterior rim is decorated with underglaze blue galloping horses amidst clouds. The footrims are decorated with petal designs. The plates may have originally been destined for the Japanese market.
