- Journal July 11/43 [1943]
3 + 5 in the press. Bushes of both
were interspersed those of 5 heavily
winter browsed by moose + summer
by deer + moose. Number 3 hardly
touched + absolutely avoided by the
deer I watched. A tall willow
(10 ft [feet]) growing through the spruce
flats (#4) had been heavily
moose browsed during the winter.
Same local. July 12/43 [1943]
Inclement weather continued. Heavy
rain at night + steady drizzle all
morning + part of afternoon. Collected
2 chipmunks + a spotted sandpiper. + did
some marking to keep occupied. Tomorrow
we pull out rain or shine.
Clearwater Lakes Cabin . July 13/43. [1943]
Left Indianhead Cabin 9:30 AM + proceeded
west up Clearwater River then forced our
way through the woods about 4 miles
up Roaring Creek. Absence of horsefeed
compelled us to return to the Clearwater
+ continue to this point. Distance
covered about 18 miles
Weather dawned fine, west wind
scattered clouds - Wind became violent
+ rain began at about 2:30 P.M.
The valley to here is heavily
timbered in spruce + pine with
many large meadows supporting
a heavy stand of grass + weeds and a shrubby
