Redearth, the other near camp. Bear + coyote
had been at both.
Census:- 3 bulls W [west] side of Redearth 5 mi [miles] up
6 cows on Bow Valley - floor.
No sign of elk seen much above
6 mi [miles] up Redearth - No sign of wintering
Moult:- most animals seen are now
shed.
Vermilion Crossing. June 23-43 [1943]
On the way over from Banff in the
20 miles west of that town saw.
150 cows, 54 calves + 4 bulls.
" June 24/43 [1943].
Today in 19 miles W. [west] of here saw
elk as follows.
2 [male symbol] (1 a spike) 2 [female symbol] ad [adult] 1 [female symbol] yearling 1 calf,
5 [female symbol] (" " 5 [female symbol].
1 [female symbol].

1 [female symbol] + calf 1 yearling [male symbol]
5 [male symbol], 16 [female symbol]'s 2 yearl. [yearling] [female symbol]'s 6 calves
13 [male symbol], 28 [female symbol]'s 8 calves
It is noteworthy that here, unlike in
Banff the large bulls (none of them
very big - antlers 12'-18') are with the
cows instead of separate from them.
