- Ambystoma [mole salamander] Victoria area
A larva collected by Ian Cowan [McTaggart Cowan]
from the Langford P.O. [post office] Pond was reported
by him to be transforming on July
and was apparently A. macrodactylum [Ambystoma macrodactylum - long-toed salamander]
If so, this is the first reared for
Vancouver Island; except for Slater's
record of specimen collected at Forbidden Plateau by Cummings[?]
Larval in the Museum, collected
about the same time are not yet
metamorphosing.
July 15 [1941] The Langford P.O. [post office] Pond (on Millstream
Rd. + 1/2 m. [mile] N [north] of Langford) is very low,
only a few inches of water, a few square
yds [yards] in extent. A few tadpoles, some
with 4 legs + several salamander
larvae were collected.
Gartner snakes + a Virginia Rail
were observed at the pond, probably
feeding upon tadpoles.
July 20? [1941] Several larva have metamorphosed
and are without doubt A. macrodactylum.
