Victoria B.C. [British Columbia]
I. McT [Ian McTaggart] Cowan 1936.
Feb [February] 23, 1936.
Lake Hill to 2 miles N. [North] of Lost
Lake along railroad track. Snowing
hard all day. Observations from
12:30 to 4:30.
As far as Lost Lake the right
of way is flanked on both sides
by farms, with scattered patches
of trees. Fences mostly lined
with Snowberry + Briar. Some
berries still on snowberry +
arbutus.
Just at this side of Lost Lake
is a small patch of first
hemlocks, with quite a stand
of Jack pine on the east side of
the track. The Lake itself
is surrounded by willow
scrub except on the north east where
a cultivated field runs
right to the shore.
Beyond the lake there are
a few farms + then heavy
Canadian zone timber of
cedar, fir + hemlock. Between
the farms + the timber is a
belt of brush supporting
numbers of arbutus.
Birds seen
Calif. [California] Purple Finch 40+/-
House Sparrow 10 +/-
