Page contains an envelope with a handwritten account of Joseph B. Clearihue's experiences of the beginning of World War I while studying French in Paris during the summer of 1914. Clearihue and his cousin, Kate Bisset, left France on September 5, 1914. The envelope contains a seating plan for a Rhodes Scholarship Trust dinner, March 7, 1914; examination papers for a B.A. exam, 1913; and French newspapers from August 3-4 and September 4, 1914.
- [start page] After passing B.C.L. exams went to Paris on July 15, 1914 to continue study of French for a couple of months, then to travel to Italy through Switzerland and sail from Naples to Canada. Address in Paris was [illegible] Lucet, Rue Vaugelin, Paris. Was in Paris when war broke out and remained there till September 5th when left with Miss Kate Bisset, an Aberdeen cousin, who was visiting East France and had been driven out by the Germans arriving in Paris as a Refugee. Luckily she had my address. We left by train with American evacuees via Rouen, La Havre & Southampton. Enclosed are French newspapers of Aug. 3 & 4th & Sept 4, 1914. I also enclose examination papers for B.A. exam in 1913 for [illegible] jurisprudence, and Rhodes Scholarship Trust Dinner Plan for March 7, 1914. [end page]
