- On Board S.S. Parkiston:- Sept [September] 16.
I left Edinburgh today by the Flying Scot at 10 AM.
I hated to pull out + leave Joyce [Cowan] by herself but
I must carry out my plans + this seems the most
suitable time to be away both from Joyce [Cowan]'s point
of view + mine. The conditions in Finland too are
just right now. + I'll be back home before
the really cold weather sets in.
Newcastle was a smoke grimed town but
quite interesting. I note that it has some
excellent modern trolly busses [buses]. fruits + vegs [vegetables] are
cheaper.
Sailed at 4:30 into a calm overcast evening.
On Board S.S. Parkiston Sept [September] 17.
We have had a rough day + this ship rolls like
a barrel. It is very light with almost no cargo
+ only some 40-50 passengers.
Several small birds came aboard in the middle
of the N. [North] Sea. All I saw were wheatears, but
there may have been other species. Wind
fresh to strong northerly freshening to Force 8 after 2 PM. Upwards of 50 fulmars
in sight at all times.
Copenhagen. Sept [September] 18/52 [1952].
The ship entered Copenhagen harbour on a beautiful
sunny morning giving view of the city + its
approaches at their very best. 18 miles up the strait
we passed close alongside Helsinor Castle, built in
the 1600's to enforce the right of collecting
a tax from every vessel entering or leaving
