- Jasper to Yellowhead April 20/43. [1943]
Leaving Jasper at 9:30 we drove up
the Miette valley to Yellowhead Pass +
return
Near town there is quite a bit of
elk sign among the aspens on the
flats and on the north slope but
very little on the south side of
the river.
A short distance above town the valley
closes in and willows up to 30-40 ft [feet] along
with spruce, alder, red osier, raspberry,
+ gooseberry become characteristic - Elk
moose + deer are present - a count of
droppings indicated 28-5-1 respectively
The red osier is heavily browsed - Most
of the willows are out of reach but the
low growth is heavily browsed. There is
still grass available at this date.
This is at 5 mile + the north side of
the river at this point is about at the
end of the sheep country.
Further up again at Dominion Prairie
the valley widens into a series of
grassy, willow bordered beaver meadows
many of them partially abandoned.
Here aspen is dominant +
elk abundant. Deer summer, moose
in fair numbers winter + summer
but not many now. They are up on
the hillsides.
