- Songhees Place Names For Greater Victoria Circa 1840. Hunting and Gathering Territory of the Songhees. Ken Josephson Cartographer. The Songhees moved from place to place in the course of their annual round of hunting, gathering and ceremonial activities. When the Songhees lived near the university lands, the campus was covered with low-lying mixed forest. They gathered plants, waterfowl, animals and building materials from the area. Materials for mats, clothing and fishing line were collected in the marshes and creeks. Below the campus on the open hillsides, women and children gathered camas root and other edible plants. Men caught seals from shore.
