  • 118 [number crossed out] 203 Mar [March] 11/62 [1962] Maria Madre Island. Mx [Mexico] Landed on s [south] end for 4 1/2 hours, climbed to the flat via roadway + walked 2 miles or s westward through semiopen very arid second growth scrub forest. Almost nothing alive in it. On beach + rocky shore saw whimbrels, tattlers, spotted sandpipers, 3 white herons with black legs + yellow feet 1 large blue heron seen several times + reasonably close, Could have collected it with the 12 ga [gauge] but today I had the 410. In the brush saw 2 small coveys of Quail + shot 1 bird, also took an orange crowned warbler - I think this is new to the islands. March 12. San Juanita Island. Landed on the S [south] beach at 10 AM. In making my third landing I got caught in the surf + got everything wet. Fortunately field glasses + camera had gone ashore on second trip. The colony of blue-footed boobies is between 1000 + 1200 nests. On the stack to the N.W. [northwest] there is a large colony of brown boobies + tropic birds Frigates are common but I do not know if they are nesting. The island is unbelievably arid Marginalia: Snowy egret
