Vermilion Crossing, B.C. June 24, 1943.
On a drive down the highway to 3
miles west of Kootenay crossing saw
1 bull 3 yrs. [years]
1 " [bull] yearling
2 cows 3 calves.
Lick:- There is a wet lick by the roadside
5-6 mi [miles] W. [west] of the camp. Here we saw
a bull, bull yearling + cow with calf
3 weeks or so old. All drank
avidly + continuously of the muddy
water which must be badly
fowled [fouled] with feces + urine. The
calf did not drink.
Interaction:- the yearling kept approaching
the cow who as frequently
chased it away. The calf stayed
close to the cow + utterd [uttered] low whining
noises. Perhaps the yearling was the cow's last years calf.
Behavior:- both the old male + the yearling
were seen to urinate on the
tarsal tufts + to rub them together
while doing so.
Tokumm Cr.[Creek] :- June 25/43 [1943]
A few moose - 6. to 12 wintered up here
mainly on the slides where they fed
mostly on balsam with what willow
projected from the snow. In the spring
Lonicera, Ribes + Rubus heavily worked.
