In Williams Lake no grebes nesting
yet but saw 30 +/- western grebe,
2 black necked, 10 or 12 horned +
4 Holboell's.
[Leo] Jobin told me much about his
area + the chilcotin.
Affirms that Trumpeter swans
nest along the Chilcotin river, he
has chased the downy young there.
His wolf scent 2 or 3 drops skunk
scent in glycerine. He puts it
in small vials + drops them
from horseback then sets
snares along the line. Never
go near a snare after it is
set.
For wolves he places the
strichnine [strychnine] in 1" cubes of pork
kidney fat, makes a small hole
in the centre, places the poison
in + seals it. Scatters these
around the bait. Work best
below zero but admits very
destructive to fox.
After baits prepared carry them
in a bucket with some horse
manure + before touching dip your [words crossed out]
rub your fingers in beaver castor
no need to use gloves.
