- May [illegible date crossed out] 28 (contd [continued]) Coots [underlined] - Many breeding birds seen
+ several nests were examined at mouth
of Still creek. One nest with 6 eggs
(collected); other with 9 partly incubated.
Near south of Deer Creek. we found a
nest with 3 newly hatched young +
3 [crossed out] 4 eggs. Young scrambled into the
water but we caught them + also took
one pipped[?] egg.
On open water was a flock of about
60 coots; apparently non-breeders, possibly
transients.
Other birds seen - Black headed grosbeak,
yellow throat [warbler?], song sparrow, Red Wing [blackbird],
Brewer's [blackbird], Pied bill [billed] grebe (1 pr [pair]),
Shovelers (1 pr [pair]), Mallard (6-10 pr [pair]),
Osprey, Falcon (?), Rooks (2)
Lewis woodpecker, Kingfisher,
Bittern, Blue heron, Rail (at least
2 spp [species] heard - one sounded like yellow
Rail according to Cowan [McTaggart Cowan] - a bird not
yet recorded from Canada.).
Flycatcher, Pin tail
Clif [Cliff] Swallows, Barn swallows +
Vaux Swifts [Vaux's Swift].
