- a hare. Drove back to the road through large herds of gazelle - mostly Tom [Thompson]
+ found them eager to run - 27-28 mph [miles per hour] seemed to be top speed. Another
group of eland put on a jumping performance for us - an amazing display.
One large group of ostrich 48 of them - many of the males acquiring the
brilliant red necks + legs prior to the nesting season in July + Aug [August]
About here we saw the last Topi. F.
From there we ran along the road toward Ngorogora [Ngorongoro] stopping briefly
at Oldubai [Olduvai] Gorge now so famous as a consequence of [Louis] Leakeys work on
fossil man. This provided a completely new habitat with thickets of
Sansevieria + Aloe + Comnifera [Somnifera] (very prickly shrub-tree forms with chlorophyll
in the bark, they produce small yellowish leaves for brief periods after any
rain of 1/2" [inch] or more) In these thorny jungles with narrow vertical opening
the dick-dick [dik-dik] were common. They were shy however + I did not get a photo
Lion + rhino [rhinoceros] tracks in the sand + many interesting small birds.
Runways of elephant shrew led from thorn patch to thorn patch
Saw my first stone curlew on the rocky stream bed there, also a [illegible word]
almost as big as a dick-dick [dik-dik].
A few miles on the plain is desperately scarred + beaten by
cattle use + here we came on a [female symbol] rhino [rhinoceros] + calf. She produced a few
bluffing charges before veering off. Photographed a pair of sand grouse
with their two new hatchlings. Then on to the crater just as
the sun began casting long evening shadows. The Wm [William?] Hamilton
were just unpacking 2 children + 1 monkey at the Zool. [Zoological] Soc. [Society] Cabin
in the crater. Wildebeest + Zebra + Grants Gazelle common. Saw 6
elephant + 5 rhino [rhinoceros] crowned crane, many egyptian geese, plover + cattle
egret. Crater is 100 sq [square] miles + contains about 25,000 game animals
