  • Journal Waterton Park. July 17, 1945. Cloudy, some rain during the night + scattered showers during the day. Rode into Bertha Lake, alt. [altitude] 5800' and saw 20 goat [underlined] - including 1 kid at a mineral spring high on the ridge to the north of the lake. Whistlers at the west end of the lake. Then rode down to the boundary trail + s. [south] to within a mile of the International boundary. No elk sign seen in this part of the park Waterton Park. July 18, 1945. Crossed the lake + worked along the lower shoulders of Vimy Mt [Mountain]. Very little game sign + plenty of good range. Some pikas in the big slide, buff-bellied chipmunks common. Saw 2 [female symbol] deer + 1 fawn. I In the evening went out to see Rigall again. Waterton Park. July 19/45 [1945]. Drove to the summit on the chief mt [mountain] road + then hiked to the head of Crooked Cr. [Creek] + climbed Sofa Mt [Mountain] to the base of the rimrock cliffs. Sidehill vegetation at timberline is about 18" deep + consists of thimbleberry, mt. [mountain] maple, + saskatoon with Heracleum present in abundance locally. Limber pine + whitebark pine dominate at timberline.
