  • Rangifer. Jasper. May 4, 1944. Fred Brewster, who was all through the Tonquin area with the army this winter saw no caribou on Astoria Creek but ran into about 20 on Portal Creek some 3 miles up from the highway. They had been there for some time + were feeding largely on willows. Wells tells me that a bunch of 10 or so used to winter just above the cabin on the Whirlpool, also that others can usually be found on Meadow Creek. A small band wintered opposite Snake Indian falls when he had the Blue Creek district he saw 5 there when he first counted them + 35 when last seen. Jasper. May 6/44 [1944] Read Dr [doctor] Hammets article in "the Backlog" + note that he saw 24 caribou at the head of Mowitch Creek the day after he passed us. Willow Creek. May 23/43 [?] Rufe Neighbor + Jud Groat state that caribou have decreased somewhat in recent years, the Indians say the same thing.
