fault hereabouts affectation + banal
garrulusness [garrulousness]. Joyce [Cowan] + I are agreed that
in the last week we have heard more
intelligent adults use more verbiage
saying less than in any week of our lives.
St [Saint] Cyrus July 30, 1952. Today was grand, + most exciting
In the afternoon we hired a Rolls + driver
+ were taken to Crathes castle by way of
Stonehaven. The castle is on the [River] Dee
close to Braemar. It occupies the most
magnificent grounds with a sweeping view
down the mains. The castle is the family
seat of the Burnetts of Leys. The grounds were
granted in 1323 + until mid 16th century
the family occupied a lake dwelling in the Loch
of Leys. The present castle was begun in 1553
+ was completed in 1595. It is magnificent,
small as castles go but beautifully proportioned
+ furnished most tastefully. The details are
given in the guide book.
The gardens are very fine + feature a
first class collection of shrubs. Among them
Mutisia oligodon [underlined] + Carpentaria californica [underlined] were
particularly impressive.
On the way back we drove over Fetterscairn
seeing some of the finest stretches of moor
I have seen so far. I took a photo of
Glendye in color. The most beautiful spot
