Nov. [November] 5-7, 1942. Indian River
Two prospector-trappers have a cabin
at the logging camp + one of them
Phil. Dalton acts as caretaker for the
place.
Birds abundant in the cleared area
adjoining the camp. Red-breasted
sapsuckers, Hairy woodpeckers, Steller [Steller's]
jays, song sparrows, winter wrens +
varied thrush. Saw 2 Ravens + heard
a crow
During evening I hunted on
west side along flume. Noted deer
browsing on salmonberry, thimbleberry
+ elder particularly.
In night a Spilogale woke me
several times as he investigated
ourselves + belongings + stamped his
disapproval
Hunted burn on East side of river
in AM of 7th. Went up south side to
head of burn - crossed over + came down north
side - Saw no deer. Tracks of
one coyote. Picked up an adult Ascophus [underlined]
According to a hunter we spoke to
2 winters go [ago] - 1939-1940 deer were very
abundant. One party shot 7 along the
4 miles of trail - + he coming along later
could have shot his limit. Report is
that wolves came in winter before
last + thinned them out.
