- Citellus columbianus [underlined]
Southesk Lake. July 17/44. [1944]
Groundsquirrels are found around
Columbia Ice Fields, Nigel Pass, Poboktan
Pass, Brazeau Lake, + all over the
northern portion of the Park but
there is no sign of them on the
Cairn or on the Southesk + its
tributary valleys
In these places Callospermophilus [underlined]
+ Marmota are abundant.
Can it be that there is a discontinuity
of suitable habitat. Certainly there
is no suitable lowland habitat
connecting these valleys with the
Brazeau River + the divides are
high with none known to me
less than 8800-9000 ft [feet] + thus
a good 800 ft [feet] above the limits
of vegetation.
No Citellus [underlined] down the Rocky - the
first seen were on Medicine Lake.
Field B.C. Aug. [August] 2, 1944
Extremely populous colonies all along
Sherbrooke Creek. One small colony
at Lake O'Hara.
