Food. The old buck taken Jan [January] 31
at Cowichan Lake fed for about
two hours on herbacious ground
vegetation, mostly Hieraceum [Hieracium]
but its stomach was 2/3 full
of fir + salal. From this
consideration it would seem
that observations of food
in deer minutes may give
an enormous idea of
actual food taken.
All other deer watched
today fed almost exclusively
upon the same fresh
herbaceous growth, but [word crossed out]
only some 15-20 minutes
were spent feeding on salal,
berberis + arbutus.
Behaviour: [underlined] when jumped suddenly from
their beds without having
seen + smelled one a
single deer will run a
few yards then stop + look
back.
Several deer will make a
preliminary dash in which
each deer follows an independent
route from its bed. Stop for
their look + if the object
