- Park is 6000 sq [square] miles. 600,000 geese + 500,000 gazelles.
This evening arrived here at dusk + were invited to stay with
Dr [Doctor] and Mrs Hugh Lamprey the director of the Serengeti Research
Institute. This is largely Ford Foundation sponsored.
En route I found out that there is quite a stiff park use
fee levied of all visitors. A resident pays 20/-/day- a non
resident 40/-/day. most of this goes to the local county.
Big game seen today included all seen yesterday except
wart hog + in addition Topi + 2 Buffalo + 1 hippo [hippopotamus], 3 jackall [jackal]
Numerous Maasai + their herds, + flocks of goats, the latter
supervised by children. All adults had more or less
red ochre used for decoration on head + arms. Women
often heavily decorated with beautiful bead works. Examined
an abundant enkampment [encampment].
The role of elephants as I hear it discussed
is interesting. They came into the park, mostly from the
north. They lack their usual tall grass feed here
+ during dry season [feed] on tree leaves. To get there they
uproot the trees. This leaves ground debris +
hotter fires on the next occassion [occasion] of a grass fire
this kills more trees + the country starts on
the way to becoming a grassland. An abundance
of elephants even in forest country opens the forest
+ allows more ground vegetation.
