Carrot Creek. June 5/43 [1943]
and a long bald ridge running
N [North] + south + forming the park
boundary. A mt. [mountain] sits E.W. [East-West] across
the head of the valley, lower slopes
timbered but some grassland
bluffs running down from the
rocks.
The west side burn is being
progressively invaded by aspens +
poplars moving up hill but it
now supports a luxurious growth
of grass + weeds. On the more
exposed slopes grass is scarce
+ such forbs + shrubs as Potentilla (yellow)
bearberry, + many others including sage
abound. There is some shrubby
cinquefoil + quite a lot of Shepherdia
lower down. Aspen, poplar +
willow with some Shepherdia is
the deciduous lowlan [word crossed out] valley silva.
There has been a heavy carryover
of grass + the range is in fine
shape.
The indications from Aspen
chawing is that elk have been
in here for only 2 or perhaps
3 years - that is during the winter
[Ernest] Stenton estimates perhaps 10 or
a dozen head wintered in here
My observations confirm this.
Apparently they are all bulls.
