March 12 [1962] contd [continued]:
+ is an unbroken association of
thorns, cactus + agave. The bird
population at the moment is reflected
in what I saw. 1 oriole [male symbol], 2 [male symbol] + 1 [female symbol]
cardinal, 1 [male symbol] blue mocker [mockingbird], 3 grey
headed flycatchers + several
parula warblers.
It is far better to land well to
the west of where we did, in the
lagoon. This is where I took the
party off.
March 13. [1962] San Juanita Island
This AM [morning] went fishing with Larry [Harry Meredith?].
We had several strikes + came
back in 4 hours with a 147 lb [pound]
striped marlin, a 103 lb [pound] sailfish,
+ a shark with black tipped
pectorals
In the PM [afternoon] went dredging
along the shelving beach with
good results until the boat
battery gave up + we had to
paddle back to the ship.
In the freezer. 3 boxes of birds,
in the larger one is a small box
of molluscs. 6 larger birds are
separate in plastic bags.
