  • Alces not now as abundant as 5 or 6 years ago + not so many are killed on the railroad Field B.C. Aug. [August] 3, 1944. All wardens agree that there are not now the moose there used to be. Today at lick saw 3 [female symbol] 1 calf another [female symbol] at Leanchail. Moult [underlined]:- Calf seen today was in fresh winter pelage - the first so seen. Field. Aug [August] 4 + 5. Saw 1 [female symbol] 1 calf 1? + 2 [male symbol] These were at the lick, in a swamp along the Beaverfoot + along the Yoho Valley. Moult [underlined]: The calf, though quite small was acquiring winter pelage. Condition [underlined]:- All moose seen were in good condition. Langford tells me that a very old bull with teeth worn right down. had to be destroyed [underlined] last winter It was attempting to winter along the Yoho above the switchback Voice! An adult bull watched today was feeding on willows in a swampy meadow. It gave long grunts as it walked about.
