Jasper. June 26/44 [1944]
In morning went down to Henry
house flats + worked on elk.
The new growth there is excellent
- plan to point sample it tomorrow.
Then after lunch we worked
the area around lakes Annette +
Beau verte [Beauvert] looking for a cub bear
that is reported to be seriously
ill.
The aspens there show no
sign of the intensive utilization
seen elsewhere in the vicinity,
+ in general browse conditions
are good. Shepherdia is largely
undamaged. There is however
no aspen reproduction + little
grass carry over.
Behind old Fort point we
found the west facing grass slopes
heavily overgrazed while aspen
is relatively untouched + there is
even fair aspen reproduction.
It would seem that the grazing
condition is the result primarily
of sheep activity.
