  • 18. Huang Shen (1687-C.1768) * Sounding a Musical Stone; hanging scroll; ink and light colour on paper; 115.5 x 60.3 cm; Gift of Mr. R. W. Finlayson; ngc Huang Shen, in his youth, turned to painting to earn a livelihood for himself and his widowed mother. He studied very hard and became a successful painter of figures, birds and flowers, landscapes and architecture. His paintings have often been described as having an air of humour. 19. Li Fangying (1696-1754) * Album of Twelve Plum-Blossom Paintings; ink on paper; 22 x 33.7 cm; Gift of Mr. R. W. Finlayson; ngc Li Fangying held office as a District Magistrate from 1729-1748. He was noted as a good admin�istrator and one who constantly antagonized his superiors. He excelled at painting pines, bam�boos, orchids and chrysanthemums, but he is most famous for his plum blossoms. 20. Luo Ping (1733-1799) * Album of Twelve Bamboo, Orchid and Plum Blossom Paintings; ink and colour on paper; 24.7 x 31 cm; Gift of Mr. R. W. Finlayson; ngc Lou Ping, orphaned at an early age, came under the patronage of Jin Nong and became the youngest of the Eight Yangzhou Eccentrics. He painted figures, landscapes, and flowers, but his plum blossoms are usually singled out as his finest works. He also painted ghosts and claimed it was from first-hand experience. 21. Wang Shishen (1686-1759) * (a) Two Album Leaves of Plum Blossoms; ink on paper; 25.5x34.6 cm; The Finlayson Collection (one photograph unavailable) * (b) Six Album Leaves of Plum Blossom, Pine, Bamboo Grove on River Shore, Poppy and Lotus', ink on paper; dimensions unavailable; Gift of Mr. R. W. Finlayson; ohf Wang Shishen was a man of great talent, admired for his calligraphy, poetry, painting, seal carving, and love of tea. He is often credited with setting new stylistic trends for such subjects as bamboo, garden rocks, plum blossoms, orchids and narcissus. In his old age he became totally blind. 22. Li Shan (c.1675/85-1755/62) * (a) Fish and Flowers; hanging scroll; ink and colour on paper; 131.5x59.2 cm; Gift of Miss Alice Boney; rom (b) Bamboos and Narcissus', hanging scroll; ink and colour on paper; 182.3x51.1 cm; Gift of Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Finlayson; ohf Li Shan was born into a prominent family of scholar-officials. He held an official position but offended a superior, was dismissed from his post, squandered his inherited fortune and was forced to make a living as a professional painter. His bamboo paintings were especially fine. He had unique ink tones, and was praised for his ability to penetrate the spirit of nature. 23. Jin Nong (1687-1764) * Plum Blossoms', hanging scroll ink on paper; 102.2x40*6 cm; Gift of Mr. R. W. Finlayson; NGC Jin Nong, one of the most innovative and excit�ing painters of the eighteenth century, was regarded as the leading member of the Eight Yangzhou Eccentrics. According to records, Ji Nong did not begin to paint until after turning fifty, possibly led to do so by the success of his calligraphy or by the need of a private income. It has been said that his paintings often caught a personal mood. 24.
